Hulo Films produces commercials and corporate videos, as well as documentary and dramatic films for the international broadcast market. Our approach is simple: we use our network and strategic alliances to bring the best people to the job. The quality of our content is the result of our team. The producers, directors and editors we work with have received recognition locally, nationally and internationally. At Hulo Films, it’s all about doing what’s right for the film.

Thomas

Thomas Hale is a film director who works in documentary, drama and commercials. He works as a freelancer and also operates his own production company, SEVEN Media. Thomas is an experienced writer, cinematographer, journalist and editor. Thomas is a graduate of Ryerson University’s film program. His other university studies include history, anthropology and literature. He spent formative years traveling, and lived for awhile in Paris where he learned French and studied European art and cinema. Thomas was born in Toronto but grew up in Saskatoon. He has made many cities around the world his home including Paris, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and New York City. He has been a drummer for 37 years and played his first professional job at the age of 14. He reads a lot.

Jeffrey

Jeffrey Pufahl brings over 10 years of experience directing for the stage to the Hulo directing team. Jeffrey has directed numerous plays and musicals in Montreal, Regina, Saskatoon and Estevan, and was on the directing team for The Armonico Consort’s highly acclaimed touring production of “The Fairy Queen” which toured the UK for three years. With Jeffrey’s company BSide Productions, he has written, produced, directed and acted in two international Fringe Festival hits: Prairie Salt and Caberlesque! which both toured Canada to rave reviews. Jeffrey is a well-known actor and has performed with Globe Theatre, Persephone Theatre and Off Broadway in Caligula: an Ancient Glam Epic. He is a director for the award-winning documentary series Landing and was an associate producer for The Psychedelic Pioneers. Jeffrey has worked as a vocal coach for other documentary filmmakers. When not making theatre or documentaries Jeffrey spends his time traveling around the world giving Thai yoga massage, teaching yoga and body surfing. He is a facilitator with the Transformational Breath Foundation and helps people heal through breathing.

Jennifer

Graduating from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Jennifer Prokop majored in film and video, and minored in photography. This training has Jennifer well-prepared for her role as editor at Hulo Films. She has worked on a number of Hulo projects including both seasons of Landing: Stories from the Cultural Divide. Jennifer understands that documentary stories are often found in the edit suite, and she enjoys the opportunity to contribute to the storytelling process in this way. Jennifer also has extensive experience in dramatic production, including the children's series, Wapos Bay. She was part of the team that won a Gemini Canada Award for the pilot episode, “There’s No ‘I’ in Hockey” in 2006. Wapos has won several Geminis since then and Jen continues to be a key creative with the series. Other credits include Cosmic Current (Additional Editing), Say Hello to Frederick (Editor), The Human Dissector Lab (Editor), Caught in the Headlights (assistant editor) and The Hit (assistant editor).

Ryan

Co-founder and producer of Hulo Films, Ryan Lockwood is a documentary filmmaker and writer with broadcast credits as producer, showrunner, director, writer, researcher and sound recordist. Previous to working in television production, Ryan worked as a marketing professional within the advanced technology sector specializing in market research, business development, and technology commercialization.


Stephen

Co-founder and executive producer, Stephen Huszar leads dramatic development at Hulo Films. Splitting his time between Saskatoon and Vancouver, he is an experienced actor with credits in a number of feature films and recent guest starring and recurring roles in TV series, including: Corner Gas, Smallville and Paradise Falls. Wrapping up production of his second dramatic film in July, Interpersonalities had its world premiere at the São Paulo International Film Festival, the US premiere is in Santa Monica, the Australian premiere in Victoria and the Canadian premiere is at the Whistler Film Festival. Interpersonalities is being distributed by Ouat Media in Toronto. Stephen is now working hard on the follow-up to Interpersonalities with one dramatic series and two features in development.

Tera

The newest addition to the team, Tera Maguire is associate producer for Hulo Films. She specializes in publicity and communications, having done work for the Gemini award-winning Wapos Bay and the National Film Board of Canada. Tera joined the film industry from the sporting world, where she was director of communications and public relations for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and spent time overseas working for professional hockey team the Belfast Giants. Belfast is where she met her future husband, a touring singer/musician. Tera now also manages the Canadian end of his music.

Brad

Brad Merkle is an editor at Hulo Films, who also brings extensive graphic design experience to the post-production process. From writing, shooting and editing to troubleshooting technical problems... he does it all. Brad was the editor of Interpersonalities and is an editor of Landing. He was assistant editor of Mad Cow Sacred Cow, and on Rabbit Fall Season 2. During high school, Brad began making short films and soon after he bought his own camera and editing system and got to it. He continues to work on developing new projects for film, television and the internet. Brad was born in Saskatoon, growing up on the prairies and south of the border, in Washington. He, his wife and their two children now call Saskatoon home.

Aidin

Aidin Nakhai is a key director for Hulo Films, directing documentaries and more recently, dramatic productions. Aidin directed his first short film with Hulo Films, Interpersonalities, which had its world premiere at the São Paulo International Film Festival, the US premiere is in Santa Monica, the Australian premiere in Victoria and the Canadian premiere is at the Whistler Film Festival. He is a director for the award-winning documentary series Landing, which is now entering a third season of production. Before joining the Hulo directing team, Aidin worked in television in South Australia. Studying film at the University of Regina, Aidin graduated with a B.F.A. in film and video production in 2005. Aidin was born in Tehran, Iran. At age 2, his family escaped the Iranian revolution due to religious persecution and came to Canada, settling in Saskatoon. Aidin speaks Farsi/Persian and, in his free time, he likes to play chess and watch movies.
